#FSBmemberSpotlight

We want to highlight the fantastic array of small businesses we have on our doorsteps. In this feature we ask an FSB member some key questions about their business journey and involvement with FSB.

This week we hear the story of Cerri McDonald and her business Prospect 13.

If you have a story to share, please get in touch with us at [email protected].

Q1. Tell me about your business

Prospect 13 is Scotland's first and only virtual marketing consultancy supporting a global client base.

As a professional Marketing & Communications Specialist with 20+ years working experience in fast paced positions for Oil & Gas and Information Technology companies, I wanted to introduce a new approach to outsourced marketing support.

Our flexible subscription-based service allows clients’ the opportunity to tap into a range of marketing support activities to overcome growth challenges.  Whether this is for a couple of hours, a day or week each month, the virtual marketing service offers the value and benefits of having an in-house marketing resource dedicated to understanding your business and objectives, acting like an extension to your team.

Throughout my career, I have always had a passion for helping organisations get heard in busy, competitive markets. I love the sense of achievement that targeted, results driven marketing can deliver and for those that know me well, getting under the skin of a business, creating ideas and developing strategies is what I do best.

The customised subscription service is suitable for all types of organisations and we are currently supporting a range of cross sector businesses including Oil & Gas, IT, Education, Food & Drink, Events and Professional Services.

Q2. What's the best thing about working for yourself?

I love the fact that things can move at a much faster pace with my own business. For so many years, I worked in the corporate world governed by politics, agendas and red tape and it was frustrating waiting to get approval to sign off on projects. Being a small business, we can be more proactive, stay nimble and get things done!

The diversity of my job is great. We have a huge mix of clients that no two days are the same. We have lots of different companies all at different stages of their marketing journey and all with varying degrees of marketing requirements, so it keeps it exciting.

One of the biggest benefits to being self-employed is of course the flexibility to work on my own terms and on my own timeline.

I have been able to build a fabulous team and we all love what we do! We work hard but we also have a fun and upbeat office vibe which keeps the creativity and ideas flowing.

Q3. What piece of advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own business?

Just go for it and refuse to give up. It is daunting to come from full time employment to setting up on your own and it is a huge risk, but have faith in yourself – you are in control and with sheer hard work, determination, bravery and tenacity, you can be successful.

I believe all hurdles are learning opportunities which lead to better things. I am a firm believer in shaping your own destiny – at the end of the day, you are the only one that can make it all happen. If you know every part of your business and have a clearly defined brand, you can stay focused and see results.

I have also learnt to seek support from my industry peers – I rely on my extended network of business gurus and associates as their support has been pivotal.

Q4. How has your FSB membership helped you?

I have had so much valuable support from the FSB which has been extremely helpful during the first few years of business. They have not only provided advice and guidance but can relate to my experiences and emotions involved in managing my own business which provides comfort and encouragement.
