Sir Ed Davey Discussion

Local News 10 Feb 2023

FSB Members recent roundtable discussion was with Sir Ed Davey Leader of the Liberal Democrats.

In keeping with Surrey policy to meet MPs, our most recent roundtable discussion was with Sir Ed Davey Leader of the Liberal Democrats. Issues discussed were as follows:

ULEZ – Sir Ed explained that following the demise of the Greater London Authority (GLA) all power was handed to the Mayor of London and as much as local authorities on the borders will say that they will not comply it is out of their control. Now the plan will proceed for a date in August. It can only be postponed if Central Government step in. Sarah King gave notice of FSB campaign #MyULEZConcern and Sir Ed requested a ULEZ related meeting with the London Team.

The business energy support package will expire soon, and Sir Ed continues to support a windfall tax on energy companies.

Business rate reform, described as an analogue tax in a digital age. Kingston area particularly hit. He applauds FSB persistent lobbying on this issue.

R&D Tax Credits – Sir Ed is at a loss with Governments attitude and cited as an example the great work in fashion design carried out by Kingston University. Ranked in the top 4 in the world. Withdrawing R&D will stifle investment.

How can the Lib Dems influence change. More and more MPs are required, and Sir Ed will keep persevering on that course.
