Rates Review – NI small businesses deserve to be valued

Press Releases 9 May 2019

Responding to the announcement by the Department of Finance that they are to undertake a full and comprehensive review of business rates, FSB NI Head of External Affairs, Roger Pollen has welcomed the review and stated that the value of all small businesses needs be recognised.

Commenting, FSB NI Head of External Affairs, Roger Pollen said:

“We very much welcome this review. Rates are a disproportionate burden on smaller businesses and restrict their ability to invest, grow and create jobs.

“A significantly higher proportion of small businesses in GB are exempt from rates compared to their counterparts in Northern Ireland, and the benefit of enhanced rates relief announced by the Chancellor at the last budget was not passed on to firms here.

“We look forward to having substantive discussions with the Department of Finance, and we will fully engage with the upcoming ‘Innovation Lab’, as we seek to change rates policy so we can help SMEs survive and thrive.

“Above all, we must look to improve the level of support available, and ensure we recognise the value of all small businesses which bring life to our communities.”
