Putting Bedlington on the map

Local News 16 Oct 2023

FSB North East Member Rachel Wellbelove is aiming to put the village of Bedlington in Northumberland, here’s her story.

I have been involved with the FSB – Federation of Small Business for some 12 years now, so when I was asked by Reshma Begum, Development Manager North East England if I would be happy to “spotlight” the work of the Regional FSB Hubs and the North East in particular, I jumped at the chance.

The FSB was a logical choice when starting out in business and remains an integral part of my business network. People instantly think of the work they do in championing the Government on behalf of business owners, but there is so much more to the membership package. FSB Care, Legal Hub, Funding and the all-important documents store with a wealth of time saving template documents.

When COVID hit they came into their own, increasing the number of online events and ensuring business owners stayed connected. For me the ability to tap into these events has seen our business profile increase and access to key partners grow. All at a terrific value membership price!

The North East has many well know areas, Sunderland, Durham, Newcastle, Amble, Rothbury, the list goes on. Yet, in the heart of Northumberland, there lies a secret worth sharing - Bedlington, a quiet neighbour to the bustling port of Blyth and some of the busier seaside towns.

For me, Bedlington isn't just a passion; it's a mission. In the next six months, my goal is to put Bedlington firmly on the map.

To support Bedlington's growth, we're introducing our first serviced accommodation property, designed to cater to business travellers and leisure seekers. In an area where large hotel chains are scarce and traditional accommodations may lack all the comforts of home.

We've launched a 2-bedroom standalone house packed with luxury amenities, conveniently just 300 meters walk to Front Street with sumptuous Super King beds, lounge, dining room, a dedicated work area, EV Charger, private outside space and secure off road parking. A home away from home.

This corner of the North East is currently experiencing an influx of investment, with Blyth receiving £20.7 million for regeneration, an additional £1.5 million is going towards new training equipment at the town's Energy Central Campus. Plus, there's more on the horizon…….

Bedlington itself has a rich history, more recently known for the Bedlington Terrier (a fluffy little dog), but long before this little chap came along there were references to Bedlington, circa 1050! The town played a vital role in the early days of the ironworks and was part of the locomotive's history spanning far and wide.

Front Street, with its historic buildings, is a great place for a stroll, a bite to eat and a tipple!  Back in the day I have reliably been told Bedlington had 23 pubs!

Fun Facts - The first recorded use of a Penny Black stamp was on a letter sent to Bedlington Ironworks in 1840.

An 18th Century stone obelisk marks the site of the historic Market Place.

The V R Post Box is one of the oldest in Northumberland.

Importantly, Bedlington is now set to become one of six new train stations on the "Northumberland Line," with frequent trains to the city. The future looks promising, with rising demand.

If you're looking for a unique destination just 25 minutes from Newcastle and 10 minutes from the beach, Bedlington is calling. Let's work together to boost tourism, attract investment, and support local businesses in this lovely town.
