ARFOR Challenge Fund

Local News 14 Jun 2023

ARFOR is a joint venture by Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Gwynedd and Anglesey Councils seeking to use entrepreneurship and economic development to support and maintain the Welsh Language.

The ARFOR Challenge Fund is looking to fund collaborative projects involving any combination of individuals, institutions, community groups and/or businesses that are looking to explore ideas that would benefit the Welsh Language and economy.

A second phase of ARFOR granted an additional £11 million to the fund that will be available until the end of March 2025.

Made available in four counties with the highest level of Welsh speakers, the programme will play a key role in the Welsh Government's Welsh Language Strategy, Cymraeg 2050, which aims to ensure there are 1 million Welsh speakers by 2050.

The aim of the Challenge Fund will be to explore solutions strengthening the relationship between the Welsh language and the economy and are looking for schemes that offer to test:

  • The Welsh language boosts the economy
  • The Welsh language provides new employment opportunities
  • The use of the Welsh language can help to create a brand and an attraction for businesses
  • The use of the Welsh language can ignite a sense of pride and community belonging
