UK GOVERNMENT URGED TO HONOUR GIBRALTAR VOTE ON SOVEREIGNTY

Reference number: P2002/44

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) today urged the UK Government to honour the vote on sovereignty organised by the Gibraltar authorities which is due to show a huge strength of opposition to London and Madrid for joint sovereignty over Gibraltar between the UK and Spain.

The FSB, which has fellow members in Gibraltar, reaffirmed its support at its last conference with a unanimous vote for Gibraltar to remain totally British with no loss of sovereignty.

Speaking from Gibraltar the FSB’s International Ambassador Mr Brian Prime said,

“We are appalled with the manner in which the deep concerns and wishes of the people of Gibraltar and in particular their small business community are being pushed aside”.

Mr Prime who has already written to the Foreign Secretary Jack Straw on this subject continued, “We understand and support fully the Government of Gibraltar in holding its own referendum. The referendum results will provide guidance as to the strength of feeling for the negotiators and we hope that they take these feelings into account”.

The FSB has also called on the UK Government to remove “sovereignty” from the negotiations with Spain and is joined in its opposition to any loosening of the ties between Gibraltar and the UK by one of the largest trade unions (TGW) in Britain.
