Scottish Labour's Jackie Baillie talks small business and the General Election

FSB spoke with Jackie Baillie, MSP, Economy Spokesperson for Scottish Labour ahead of June's General Election.

Why should smaller business owners in Scotland vote for Scottish Labour? Jackie Baillie MSP

Scottish Labour back those who run or want to start their own business. They help generate the wealth we need to invest in the services which are important to us. Our economy faces challenges in the years ahead so we want to see more done to help our risk takers and wealth creators, by helping businesses with the challenges they face. That’s why we are committed to a government minister for micro businesses, small businesses and entrepreneurs and have pushed the SNP to adopt our plan to provide support worth £37million for business affected by the business rates revaluation.

We'll continue to work in partnership with businesses, entrepreneurs and workers to create a stronger economy.

What are your party's top three policies that would help Scottish smaller firms and the self-employed?

  • We will establish a Scottish Investment Bank - part of a National Investment Bank - with £20bn worth of lending power over the next decade. The bank will deliver the finance that our small businesses, co-operatives and innovative projects need across the whole country.
  • We will also protect small businesses by reintroducing the lower small profit rate of corporation tax and will exclude small businesses from costly plans to introduce quarterly reporting.
  • For the self-employed, a Labour Government would shift the burden of proof, so that the law assumes a worker is an employee unless the employer can prove otherwise.

What's been your favourite small business that you've visited while campaigning?

My favourite visit has been to Deli in the Square in Helensburgh. A small business that is at the heart of my local community, providing jobs and investment, and keeping the good people of Helensburgh well fed and watered.
