FSB: Dumbarton East businesses need additional support

Reference number: SPUR1706

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has called on the West Dunbartonshire Council to provide additional support for smaller firms that have been affected by the closures of Glasgow Road in Dumbarton East.

The small business campaign group will meet with council officials this week to discuss what can be done to help those affected. FSB has called for practical measures of help such as business rates relief, better signage and raising awareness through the council’s social media that businesses are open as usual on Glasgow Road.

Hisashi Kuboyama, FSB’s development manager for Dunbartonshire, said: “We have been approached by our members on Glasgow Road about the road closures. Some have been affected badly, already having had to lay off their staff, whilst others see their turnover down compared to the previous few years. The closures have definitely had a negative impact on local firms.

“Whilst businesses understand that the work needs to be done, they are looking to the council and the contractor SGN for support as the road work is hitting their bottom line.

“Therefore we have asked the council to look at practical measures such as introducing hardship business rates relief and better signage to boost footfall. The council can also utilise their social media channels to highlight the fact that firms are open as usual on Glasgow Road. Swift action is needed to help mitigate the negative impact.”

FSB has also suggested that the contractor SGN should speak to firms in the area and provide a single point of contact.

Hisashi Kuboyama added: “Many businesses don’t know who they can speak to if something happens regarding the roadwork. A single point of contact will help improve communications and provide clarity to businesses, which will help them plan ahead and make decisions on hiring and investing.”
