FSB Wales Blog - Dr Beynon’s Bug Farm

Nestled on the West Wales coast just outside St Davids, Dr Beynon’s Bug Farm is a truly innovative attraction welcoming families from around Wales – and the world – every year. Dr Beynon's Bug Farm is a novel and innovative venture that links science, agriculture, education, and tourism in an interactive and unique way. Founded by an academic entomologist, ecologist, The Bug Farm is committed to conservation through research, innovation and education, and runs a world class research and education centre, visitor attraction and working farm.

Dr Sarah Beynon established The Bug Farm in 2016 after wanting to bring her passion for entomology and sustainable farming back to her home town of St Davids. The bug museum and bug zoo can both be found at the site which brings to life the amazing species of bugs and insects that can be found all over the world.

The Bug Farm is also home to the Grub Kitchen; the UK’s first restaurant promoting entomophagy – the practice of eating insects. On the menu are dishes such as the famous Grub Burger and Grub Cookies, as well as local and seasonal produce.

Not only is the Bug Farm a fantastic attraction in its own right, Dr Beynon and her team are now working with tourism businesses across St Davids on the newly launched Pollinator Trail which takes visitors on a pollinator treasure hunt! At each station, there is an area of pollinator habitat and some Welsh art for visitors to enjoy. This new attraction launches in June in time for insect week which runs from 18th – 24th June.

Although still a new business, The Bug Farm has gone from strength to strength since its launch in 2016. It won best start-up business at the 2016 FSB and WorldPay Awards, and were finalists in the Green-Ethical business category at the 2017 FSB & WorldPay UK Business Awards. The Bug Farm is also the winner of a Pembrokeshire Tourism award for sustainable business of the year in 2018.

Having come so far and so quickly, it is clear that Dr Beynon’s Bug Farm have a huge future ahead of them.
