Did you know that by 2022 one in three people of working age will be over fifty? To raise awareness, FSB Wales is supporting the Welsh Government’s, ‘People Don’t Have a ‘Best Before’ Date’, which encourages more employers to recognise the importance of retraining, retaining and recruiting older workers. Wales’ workforce is getting older. People living longer and staying fitter, removal of the default retirement age and changes to pension arrangements all influence people’s attitudes to working in later life. What’s more, young people joining the labour market may not fill all of the future vacancies. Therefore, older workers are an increasingly important part of our workforce and vital for the future of our economy and our businesses. Retaining people, developing their skills throughout their working life and recruiting older workers have never been more critical to business survival as well as growth. The time to plan for an ageing workforce is now, not just for larger businesses but also for SMEs, where the loss of skills and cost of recruitment can be more consequential. That’s why we’re supporting the ‘People Don’t Have a ‘Best Before’ Date’ campaign to ensure Wales has the skills it needs to compete in the global marketplace, both now and in the future.
