The Scottish Conservatives' Dean Lockhart talks small business and the General Election

FSB caught up with Dean Lockhart MSP, Shadow Economy Secretary for the Scottish Conservatives ahead of the General Election on the 8th of June.

Why should smaller business owners in Scotland vote for the Scottish Conservatives? Dean Lockhart MSP

The Scottish Conservative Party is the party of small business and the role that they play in our communities. We understand that small businesses are the wellspring of growth. They form a key part in Scottish life, valued for their contribution to every community across the country. We will continue to make the case for the easing of the business rate burden and a reduction in the bureaucracy and regulation that prevents small business from flourishing.

What are your party’s top three policies that would help Scottish smaller firms and the self-employed?

  • Firstly, the UK Government want to make sure our economy stays strong and to bring prosperity to the whole of our country. It is our firm intention to reduce taxes on Scotland’s working families and businesses.
  • Secondly, we are committed to maintaining business rate parity between Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom. Deeper structural reform is needed and we look forward to reading the recommendations of the Barclay review, which was set up following pressure from the Scottish Conservatives to reform the rates system. A more responsive, simpler and more flexible business rates system should be the overarching outcome.
  • Thirdly, the UK Government is backing Scottish businesses with over a billion pounds in extra investment through the block grant and direct investment into key industries. We will therefore deliver a City Deal for every city region in Scotland and ensure that the investment is used to help to create an environment for small businesses to flourish. We will also help secure the long-term sustainability of the Scottish economy by placing Scotland and Scottish industries at the centre of our industrial strategy. We urge the Scottish Government to work closely with the UK Government to ensure a more joined up approach to economic strategy which will deliver for the whole country.

What’s been your favourite small business that you’ve visited while campaigning?

On the campaign trail we visit a range of businesses of all sizes. It would be unfair to single one out, but it’s incredibly interesting to see first-hand the kind of dedication required to make these firms work, and to meet the people responsible for doing so. I come from a family background of small business so I totally understand that it can be a 24/7 commitment.
