The new intelligent merchant city at Fawley Waterside

Local News 18 Jun 2021

Today was a day that will always stand out in my memories, writes Nicola Bailey.

This was my first ‘face to face meeting’ in about 16 months, in the new Post Covid world! And I was privileged to meet up with Brett Trafford at the inspirational Fawley Waterside, site of the planned Intelligent Merchant City.

It felt really significant that this should be my first meeting.

After what has been a pivotal year for small businesses on so many levels, the Intelligent Merchant City project is a beacon of optimism, hope, innovation and progress for the whole world to aspire to, and presents an abundance of opportunity to the #Solent small business community and beyond.

The Fawley Power Station began operation in 1971 as a 2000 megawatt oil-fired power station but was closed in March 2013 due to economic restraints.  You can view this video to see the true scale of the site

The vision for the Fawley Waterside Intelligent Merchant City is to transform the site into a thriving sustainable residential and commercial waterside community that becomes a destination for employment and leisure activity.

The site is one of the largest brownfield sites in Southern England, located in a spectacular location, near Calshot, on the West bank of Southampton Water, looking out across the entire Solent area from Southampton, Fareham, Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight.

The ambition is to build one of the most beautiful small towns in England. A place with solid economic purpose, that has been very deliberately designed to mix jobs, homes and services.  Fawley Waterside will be a place that is attractive to both people and commer4ce.  This new sustainable community will be home to around 4000 people.  For the full scale of the Master Plan you can read more here
