#FSBmemberSpotlight

We want to highlight the fantastic array of small businesses we have on our doorsteps. In this feature we ask an FSB member some key questions about their business journey and involvement with FSB.

This week we hear the story of Emma Armes, who runs Aberdeenshire based Emma Armes Pain Therapy

If you have a story to share, please get in touch with us at [email protected]

Tell us about your business

I was a Paramedic for 17 years. I injured my back which led to my medical retirement. Losing my career led to some depression and anxiety and I started seeing a hypnotherapist. During my sessions not only did it sort my issues, but I realised that I could still help people, just in a different way. So, I retrained and opened my own therapy practice.

In May 2017, after 7 years of chronic pain, trying every different solution including surgery and strong medication I came across a therapy called OldPain2Go(R).  This therapy removed my back pain completely and I’ve been pain free ever since!

I realised that I could help people that thought (like I did) that they would never be well again. As Scotland’s Master Practitioner and Authorised Trainer, I now I work with clients and also teach other therapists all over the world. This year alone I’ve helped people in New Zealand, Australia and Canada as well as Peterhead to Plymouth!

I now specialise in helping people reduce and remove their chronic pain of all types including arthritis, sciatica, back and joint pain, and most recently clients with Raynauds - a debilitating issue that gives people white, numb “dead feeling” extremities. They have been told there is nothing that can be done, and they have to live with it. Well, my clients are now enjoying snowball fights with their kids and dog walking in the rain with warm hands and feet!

What's the best thing about working for yourself?

Being my own boss, the flexibility of choosing my own hours so I can work around my husband’s shifts, the school run and holidays. Work nights out are pretty lonely though!

What piece of advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own business?

Just do it! Its not as hard as you imagine and once you're doing it it’s much easier to learn on the job. It is so rewarding.

Have you used any of your FSB benefits/How has your membership helped you?

I’ve not been a member for long but the amount of information on the website is phenomenal! So much advice and guidance on really important things like tax and GDPR not to mention Covid at the moment.
