#FSBmemberSpotlight

We want to highlight the fantastic array of small businesses we have on our doorsteps. In this feature we ask an FSB member some key questions about their business journey and involvement with FSB.

In this feature we hear from Bruce Skinner Owner and CEO of Aberdeen based ALTO.

Q1. Tell me about your business

Founded in 2009, Alto is a market-leading Managed Services and Security Provider (MSSP) provider and we provide one-stop cover for IT infrastructure and support services.  We are based in Aberdeen and we employ a team of experienced IT consultants who use combined experience of more than 100 years to deliver high quality products and services to more than 50 clients in Scotland and beyond.  We represent a diverse range of sectors varying from oil, healthcare and accountancy to hospitality, third sector and toy manufacture.

Q2. What's the best thing about working for yourself?

Since I was a teenager, I have aspired to run my own business and, undoubtedly, my main driver is freedom of choice. That mindset has been fundamental in facilitating expansive growth for us in the past year because we have been able to make free choices and take a long-term view around and beyond Covid-19. This has enabled us to shape our business accordingly and with a firm emphasis on customer relationships providing robust, leading-edge solutions which evolve in step with changing business requirements.

Q3. What piece of advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own business?

From a personal point of view, I think it’s vital to take time to listen to those who have succeeded in business before you, and remember that you don’t know everything. Vulnerability is important. In my professional capacity, I would say that anyone starting a business should leverage as much subscription and cloud based services as possible. At the same time, be mindful to consider cybersecurity, as you can use these services wherever you are working, it is important to make sure that the technology is in place to safeguard your data.

Q4. How has your FSB membership helped you?

Being a member of the FSB is important in helping to keep us up-to-date with legislation in a straightforward manner. We have also made use of the FSB helplines and these are a great resource. Ultimately, being a member of FSB feels good, it’s nice to be part of such a supportive business community.
