Move is an important step for many businesses, but this is only the beginning of Wales' economy recovery

Press Releases 6 Aug 2021

Commenting on Wales’ move to Alert Level 0, Ben Francis, FSB Wales Policy Chair, said:

“That conditions remain good enough for Wales to move to Alert Level 0 is very positive, although we note the First Minister’s caution about the way we should all approach these changes and the need for everyone to continue to take steps to keep Wales safe.

“For those businesses that have been closed throughout the pandemic, today will be a really significant moment for them. Also, many businesses will be pleased to see that there is clear guidance from Welsh Government – both on the remaining legal directions that apply at Alert Level 0 and on the requirements of the risk assessment process.

“We would call on all businesses in Wales to access the guidance from Welsh Government and to undertake a risk assessment, it is also a legal requirement that this risk assessment be undertaken in conjunction with employees.

“It’s going to be incredibly important that Welsh Government ensures that there is a strong communication campaign with businesses to ensure that as these changes come into force, business owners are given all the support they need to make any further changes and adapt to an evolving environment.

“Furthermore, we’ve heard disturbing reports in recent weeks of business owners and staff receiving abuse from some customers as they apply Coronavirus restrictions. We’d urge all members of the public to think about both how they can support small businesses at this difficult time but also to ensure that they are respectful and considerate of staff when they do so. There is absolutely no way to justify abusive behaviour towards business owners and their staff who are working under challenging circumstances to deliver a service whilst also keeping staff and customers safe.

“Whilst today’s news will be positive for many, it is important to remember that we are only at the very beginning of Wales’ economic recovery and there will still be much work to do in order to shore up businesses and help them get back on track so that they can both regain ground that was lost but also continue to push forwards, pursue growth and meet their ambitions. We hope to see that Welsh Government will match the ambition of these firms by providing the support infrastructure that businesses will need to make these goals a reality.”
