Kent and Medway comment on the new Figures from the Department for Communities

Reference number: 201308Businessraes

New figures from the Department for Communities and Local Government show that the number of businesses claiming small business rates relief has trebled in the past three years. Commenting on the latest figures which show a third more small firms benefitting from small business rates relief in 2012 than in 2009, Roger House, Chairman at the Federation of Small Businesses in Kent and Medway said:

"Business rates place a significant burden on Kent''s small firms.  The announcement that the amount being claimed in small business rate relief has trebled is good news for the whole economy, as this has supported growth and job creation.  It also underlines just how important it is for the Government to make the current rate of small business relief permanent at this year''s Autumn statement.

"Recent FSB research shows seven per cent of our members pay more in business rates that rent, so the Government must act to help those still struggling by cancelling the inflationary increase planned for next year."
