FSB Wales response to announcements on supporting the high street

Responding to the Welsh Conservative and Welsh Liberal Democrats announcements on supporting the high street today, Janet Jones, Wales Policy Unit Chair, said:

“Regenerating our high streets and ensuring they have a sustainable future should be a top priority for local councils across Wales, and we are encouraged to see the Welsh Conservatives and Welsh Liberal Democrats putting forward proposals on this. The primary interface between our members and government is through local authorities, and it is important that this is effective and transparent.

“As Wales’ biggest business organisation FSB Wales has undertaken work on many issues facing small businesses. Our recent survey work demonstrates that business rates is a key issue for local high streets. FSB Wales has urged local councils to take swift action on the recently announced high streets relief scheme and to communicate this effectively to businesses. We’ve also called for local authorities to set out place plans for towns and commercial centres working with their local businesses, as well as a renewed focus on filling vacant retail space.

“We look forward to seeing more of the detail about how each of the parties plans to help regenerate high streets around Wales and will support small businesses following the elections on 4 May.”
