FSB Wales Blog - April Business of the Month, St David’s First Aid Training Ltd

Tom MolyneuxTom Molyneux has adopted entrepreneurship at a young age; he started his business, St David’s First Aid Training Ltd, fresh out of university at the age of 22. His passion for teaching first aid came from a surfing accident he had as a young boy, which took place in the sea off Gwithian beach in Cornwall. Having hit his head while bodyboarding, a lifeguard had to maintain Tom’s neck and spine position while he waited to be air-lifted to hospital. This awakened Tom’s interest in how essential it is to have good first aid skills in an emergency situation.

Consequently, from the age of 12 Tom went to a life-saving club and started learning first aid skills, and began undertaking lifeguarding qualifications aged 16. When Tom moved to Cardiff aged 18 to attend university, he began planning to start his business following his graduation in 2016.

From the start of 2017, St David’s First Aid Training Ltd has been fully established and is running courses across Cardiff and South Wales. Tom now works with his good school friend Lewis Owen - who also came to university in Cardiff – and the two are working together to grow the business.

Tom and Lewis are ambitious for the growth of the business which currently offers five first aid courses aimed at those requiring a qualification for work or wishing to learn first aid. The company website www.stdavidsfirstaid.co.uk allows clients to look up what type of course they require and book a course online at a central Cardiff venue or organise training at the client’s premises. Recent clients have come from education, manufacturing, leisure and retail sectors.

As the business develops, Tom hopes to add on additional water lifeguarding qualifications. In the longer term, Tom hopes to employ upwards of ten staff delivering courses across South Wales and hopes to have an input in the development of what first aid qualifications should look like in the future.

Having learned first-hand how having good first aid skills can make a huge difference in emergency situations, Tom believes that if he shares his skills and knowledge on First Aid, he could be indirectly be saving lives every day.
