FSB talks export at the IFB

Yesterday FSB was in Liverpool to host a day of discussion and debate about the many opportunities for small business looking to export at the International Festival of Business. Check out our facebook page for the photos.

The event ‘From Northern Powerhouse to Global Markets – Small Firms and the Global Trade Agenda’ was opened by UK Secretary of State for Business, Sajid Javid, who started by celebrating the renewed success of Northern Cities like Liverpool and Manchester – but called for greater intercity co-operation to bring wider prosperity to the Northern economy.

“Between 1981 and 2013, economic growth in most of northern England was well below that of the UK average. That’s something this government is not prepared to tolerate. Which is why we’re working with business and local government to create the Northern Powerhouse” said Mr Javid.

“Across the whole region we’re investing in science and technology. We’re investing in transport, in innovation, in digital. We’re investing in culture and tourism. And we’re devolving real power, giving the north a powerful new voice.”

Hosted by BBC North West’s Political Editor Arif Ansari, the FSB event brought together an impressive list of international speakers and FSB members.

With recent figures showing the trade deficit widening, the event explored the export challenges and opportunities facing the UK’s 5.4 million smaller firms.

Discussion focussed on opportunities for small firms in a changing landscape of trade agreements, barriers small firms experience when they start to export, and how small firms can benefit from supply chains.

However, if you missed yesterday, never fear! We’re looking forward to another FSB event at the IFB tonight (Tuesday 21 June). ‘Nurturing small acorns – from grassroots to global markets’ will take place at The Edge Festival at the IFB.

The event will be held at Hill Dickinson LLP, No. 1 St Paul’s Square from 5pm. We will be holding seminars on the legal pitfalls of International Trade and making social media work for your business internationally.Register now for your free ticket.
