What is Making Tax Digital VAT?

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is an HMRC initiative designed to help businesses and individuals correctly calculate their tax through a system that is more efficient, effective and simpler to use. MTD for VAT is already in place.

From April 2026, self-employed individuals and landlords with an income of more than £50,000 will be required to keep digital records and provide quarterly updates on their income and expenditure to HMRC through MTD-compatible software. Those with an income of between £30,000 and £50,000 will need to do this from April 2027.

How do I register for Making Tax Digital?

The registration process copies your VAT Account from the old HMRC VAT system to the new Making Tax Digital platform. You cannot connect to the new Making Tax Digital platform unless you have completed this important step.

It is important to note it can take up to 3 days to receive confirmation that you have successfully registered for completing MTD VAT Returns. You can get your registration started on the government website.

Can I still use spreadsheets for MTD?

Yes, HMRC have introduced the concept of “Bridging Software” that lets customers continue to use spreadsheets. The Bridging Feature is available within the FSB Making Tax Digital App.

To use this feature, you will need to download an Excel Worksheet containing the 9-Boxes that HMRC require you to complete. The worksheet can be embedded in your VAT file so to you have an audit trail to the invoices/expenses included in the return. When you have updated the 9 boxes in the worksheet, you can upload the file into the app and the app will update HMRC with the totals, thereby completing the submission process.

What is MTD bridging software?

Bridging Software is a term used by HMRC that enables customers to continue using spreadsheets. The spreadsheets are uploaded into the app and the app will send this information to HMRC, thereby completing the submission process.

What is a digital link for MTD?

Customers must use MTD compatible software to submit their VAT submission to HMRC. A digital link refers to the process where you connect the MTD compatible app to your HMRC Account. This is a one-off process. Once connected, the app can extract and update your HMRC account without the need for you to log in each time.

What support is available?

The FSB Making Tax Digital team provide an online 30-minute one-to-one overview session which is free to all small businesses. This overview session provides customers with the everything they need to know to become compliant with Making Tax Digital.

How long does it take to get the FSB Making Tax Digital App up and running?

Complying with MTD rules is easy and takes less than five minutes. It takes approximately one minute to connect the app to your HMRC MTD account, and just 3 minutes to upload your VAT spreadsheet to comply with MTD.

If you’re using the invoicing and expense features, you can join a 30-minute overview session to run through the basics. The FSB Making Tax Digital team also offer a free 45-minute customer onboarding session when you upgrade to the standard licence edition.
