FSB supports business prize winner at University of Brighton

FSB sponsored the best Entrepreneurial student at this year’s Brighton Business School prizegiving ceremony. The winner was Monika Offord and she was presented with her prize by Clive Soper, FSB’s South East Policy representative (pictured). Held at the Sallis Benney Theatre on Grand Parade, Brighton, the annual prizegiving celebrated the success of the City’s University students in a diverse range of professional fields from Law, Marketing, Economics, Finance and Commerce.

Asked about her success in winning her prize, Monika said she was ‘overjoyed’. Her big idea that won her the prize is a platform for artists called Blank Space. Together with her fellow student and business partner, Kamil Jarosz, Blank Space is a service to promote the work of local artists through both digital and physical marketing. “We market artists work to bars, cafes and venues. Once decorated and installed, the venue becomes visually appealing to customers and quite a talking point,” said Kamil. Each item is labelled and includes a QR code where customers can see, buy and browse the range of work by the artist, on their smartphone.

To win the prize, Monika and her Blank Space team had to research potential artists they could partner with, Brighton’s visitor economy and develop their own brand and business plan. This culminated in presenting their ‘pitch’ at a Dragon’s Den style event. “Brighton is the place for us to start,” said Monika “due to its vibrant arts and culture scene.” However, she and Kamil have plans to extend the service to other destinations, in time.

Blank Space is registered with Companies House and the talented pair are serious about taking their business venture forward. Further plans include a clothing range that carry artists work and working with musical artists too. FSBs Clive Soper added, “It is really pleasing that our winner today has an innovative business idea that supports local businesses, communities and pride of place.”
