FSB Research Project Opportunity

FSB wishes to produce research looking at the engagement of its members in schools and colleges. The key aim of the research is to develop a number of case studies of members which illustrate the ways that small businesses can develop and deliver meaningful encounters with schools and colleges, and to inform the FSB’s education policy work. These case studies should highlight how they fit with the Gatsby benchmark on good career guidance.

Overview:

In 2016 the Government announced the first of the Opportunity Areas. These are based in areas with low social mobility and look to create local partnerships formed with early year’s providers, schools, colleges, universities, businesses, charities and local authorities to ensure all children and young people have the opportunity to reach their full potential. FSB has signed the pledge to support the Opportunity Areas, committing to encouraging FSB members to offer young people opportunities to engage employers through activities such as mentoring, work experience, mock interviews and career talks.

This pilot project will focus on the Department for Education’s Opportunity Areas in Yorkshire – North Yorkshire Coast, Doncaster and Bradford. The work will commence in Scarborough in order to test the methodology;  the outcomes of which will then inform the next stage of the project in Doncaster and Bradford.
