One of the most important lessons that any manager can learn is that encouraging and fostering a positive work environment inspires employees to take joy in their work can reap huge benefits.
Happy employees are more productive, have a positive can-do attitude, are more successful in their role, and are more willing to show initiative and creativity.
Research by workplace incentives and rewards provider, One4all Rewards, asked 1,024 UK employees from different age groups, genders and industries about the impact their happiness at work has on their productivity and found that 39% of workers would work harder if they are happy in their current role or place of work.
According to the data, 38% of workers say their happiness impacts their performance at work, meaning employees’ productivity and results also see a positive effect from a happy workplace.
The data also revealed that happy employees would even be more willing to work overtime, with 30% of those surveyed saying they tot up more working hours when they are happy.
Negative workplaces result in employees who are stressed-out and distracted and this can have a devastating impact on productivity. And despite popular belief, the companies with high employee turnovers aren’t necessarily the organisations with bad working environments.
One4all Rewards’ data revealed that unhappy employees may not simply leave, instead they tend to stick around and have a negative impact on workplace productivity. The survey results showed that despite 79% of UK employees believing their boss or manager does not care about their happiness, only 30% would consider leaving the current role if they were unhappy at work.
According to employees, pay rises would have the biggest impact on their workplace morale with 44% of those surveyed saying a pay rise of 25% would increase their happiness in their current role and company. 33% of respondents felt a 10% increase in salary would be a sufficient way of boosting their happiness.
However, the research by One4all Rewards also found that several less expensive options were effective.
Being thanked by bosses for a job well done more often would increase the morale of 21% of UK employees, while 20% said increased recognitions from their boss for their work and the contributions they make would also make them happier in the workplace.
Gestures like gift cards and free lunches were also found to be cost-effective ways for businesses to bolster morale.
Commenting on the survey results, Alan Smith, UK Managing Director at One4all Rewards, said: ‘It’s clear from the research the sheer impact a happy workforce can have on a business’ success. A large number of UK workers are willing to work harder, increase productivity and their results, if they are happy and indeed their work can suffer if they are not.
Mr Smith added: ‘It’s important that UK business leaders regularly take stock of morale within their organisations and make an effort to improve it where necessary. Ensuring staff are happy in their roles and willing to work hard for the business can go a long way to help it succeed. Bosses shouldn’t just assume that if they have low staff turnover they have a happy workforce.’

Happy employees are successful employees: Employees who enjoy their work are more productive and successful, which in turn promotes innovation and creativity in the workplace.
Happy employees have the right attitude: Employees who are unhappy in their role tend to have a negative attitude that can permeate their work, resulting in a workforce that is unproductive and unprofitable. Happy employees have a positive can-do attitude, and this inspires greater performance and greater success.
Happy employees are stress-free: Unhappy employees are distracted employees and this mindset can have a devastating effect on the company’s productivity and profitability. Fostering a work environment that is positive and stress-free can lead to an instant boost in employee productivity.
