About the speaker
Chris was elected MP for Wigan in 2015, taking it from Labour. He increased his majority and vote share in the 2017 election. In August 2019, he was appointed as a Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Department for Education, a position he stepped down from in October 2020 due to his disagreement with the government's approach to coronavirus restrictions, and is now a steering committee member of the lockdown-sceptic COVID Recovery Group.
