A House of Commons All Party Small Shops Group estimates that by 2015 there will be few independent retailers in the UK
We have been overwhelmed with your response to our Keep Trade Local Campaign. We have been out and about supporting requests to launch the campaign in towns across the Thames Valley.
We have spoken to many local businesses who have told us about problems they face. Behind the scenes we have written to many of the MPs and Local Authorities in the Thames Valley asking what they are doing to slow down the closure of Britan's local retailers.
If you would like to offer your support to the campaign here are a few ways you can help:
Out and About with the Campaign
|
Butcher Phil Hyslop from The Village Butchers, said "It's been tragic to see so many local shops closing over the years as the supermarkets drag business away. "Every time they open a new supermarket it really affects our business.
Coffee Shop owner Greg Costello, said "I only have to gaze out of the window to see the slow death of the small trader. "I look up and down every day and it's never busy anymore. "They've all gone – the grocers, butchers and newsagents have all been replaced by empty facades and fast food joints". "Business rates are astronomical. We barely pay our bills and the Tesco has put even greater pressure on traders in Oxford Road". |

Atkins Butchers, High Street, Burnham |
Burnham High Street in Buckinghamshire is an excellent example of a British High Streets that the campaign wants to preserve with many independent shops including a butchers, bakers, florists, sports, book and card shops.
Mr Atkins, local butcher on the high street said: "We have seen many small businesses come and go but I think the strength of the high street association we have here in Burnham has helped the local businesses on the High Street". |
