Burton, Lichfield & Tamworth Branch

Around the Burton, Lichfield and Tamworth Branch Area

This branch area includes the City of Lichfield and the towns of Burton-on-Trent, Brownhills, Rugeley, Swadlincote, Tamworth and Uttoxeter.

Historic Lichfield

Famous for its 3-spired Cathedral, Dr. Samuel Johnson and the birthplace of Sir Robert Peel - relies on three main areas of business for its prosperity. Its centre is a regular tourist destination as well as the ecclesiastical centre for the Diocese of Lichfield; it has a significant light engineering industry in the surrounding area; and the beautiful Vale of Lichfield contributes to the local economy mainly through arable farming.

An area traditionally renowned for its brewing industry and the home of 'Marmite' and 'Branston Pickle', Burton-on-Trent is an area with a strong manufacturing base in mechanical engineering, rubber and plastic production, with many businesses serving the various automotive industries in adjoining districts. Burton-on-Trent has also been very successful in developing new business in the distribution and food industry. In fact, manufacturing accounts for over 30% of the Burton economy with distribution, hotels and restaurants at almost 25%.

Brownhills and Rugeley were former coal-mining towns and now look to the leisure and tourist industry for the major contribution to the local economies, through their proximity to the beautiful Cannock Chase. Whereas Sadlincote was famous for its clay-ware and mining industries, which have now been replaced by light-engineering and service industries.

Tamworth is home to the 'Snowdome' - Europe's first indoor ski-slope with real snow! Uttoxeter is famous for its racecourse and JCB and nearby Swadlincote is situated in the National Forest.
