SHAPE UP OR SHIP OUT; Economic Forum's future back in the melting pot

THE future of theNorth Wales Economic Forum - or at the very least the scope of its work - is back under the microscope. The forum - an umbrella organisation made up of representatives from the six local authorities in the region, business organisations, colleges and others - has weathered a couple of turbulent years after former member the Welsh Development Agency dropped out. The merger of theWDAinto theWelsh AssemblyGovernment left a gap in terms of business intelligencewhich the forum is nowacting to fillwith the setting up of a North Wales Economic Observatory, with partners in higher education.
MP listens to worries of traders

REPRESENTATIVES from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) met Coventry North East MP Bob Ainsworth to discuss local business concerns. Issues covered included business rates, the economic growth of the area, crimes against business and keeping trade local. Ric Richards, FSB Coventry branch chairman, said: "I was delighted to be given the opportunity to express the views of the small business community to one of our city's MPs. "Issues such as business rates affect the economic stability of every small business in our city and we therefore ask our MP to fight on our behalf for a fairer deal."

A BUSINESSMAN is using his expertise to try to ensure that similar small-sized enterprises enjoy the same media profile as larger firms. After spending almost two years building his reputation through personal recommendations, Peter Troy has moved his The Publicist business into offices in The Square in Sedgefield, County Durham, and taken on two staff. He describes himself as an expert in small business publicity and believes he is in a unique position to offer advice because he spent six years as a chairman of Darlington?s Federation of Small Businesses.

A Young businessman has launched a new enterprise offering website design and promotion. Adam Ulivi, who recently completed a degree in computing at the University of Glamorgan, has set up Web Together, in Chesterfield. He said: "All too often, businesses pay too little regard to their web presence. "Last year, the Federation of Small Businesses said that less than 50% of small businesses had a website." Act set to boost firms on Teesside; The issue

A RADICAL European shake-up of the financial and regulatory landscape in which small businesses on Teesside operate is on the cards. Chief among the proposals is an option for the UK Government to slash the VAT charged by local companies for locally supplied services, such as hairdressers.

PROPERTY and publishing firms are being hammered as the economy heads ominously towards recession, a study has revealed. According to the accountants Deloitte, administrations increased by 16.35pc to 1,402 in the first half of 2008.

LARGE firms have been accused of "exploiting" smaller companies by delaying invoice payments and imposing new terms and settlement fees. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) claimed large organisations were "unashamedly" making small firms wait more than 100 days before settling bills, and often changed terms and conditions with little notice. FSB chairman John Wright said: "At a time when small businesses are finding it difficult to deal with a slowing economy and rising costs, it is shocking that large companies think it is acceptable to use them as an unofficial source of credit."

SCHOOL-LEAVERS and other young people will have the right to an apprenticeship under measures outlined by the Government. All suitably qualified youngsters will be entitled to an apprenticeship place from 2013 so that within the next decade one in five youngsters will start an apprenticeship, ministers announced.
