Don’t let high energy prices put you off going green

We recently told you about the difficulties businesses are facing, dealing with the high prices of energy across the UK. British Gas and EDF were the last of the big six to commit to cutting gas prices for residential tariffs, but no news yet on small businesses and their costs.

So if you can’t secure benefits from price cuts, what can you do? The short answer is that you need to lower your carbon footprint, the less energy you use, the less you will be charged. That’s the best way to save your small business money – and it helps the environment too!

Don’t let high energy prices put you off going green

Your first point of call should be your staff. Lowering your carbon footprint looks good and feels good, plus it’s a great way to bring your team together. If they aren’t already aware, inform them of ways that you can save money. By starting simple, there’s a much higher chance that you’ll continue with the scheme into the future.

Here are some great examples:

  • Turning computer monitors off in the evening or whenever they’re not in use
  • Keep doors closed to retain heat, nobody likes a cold office
  • Turning large printers off at the wall at night, this can save you an awful lot on energy costs and it’s often forgotten about
  • Switch to energy efficient light bulbs
  • Turn off air conditioning or heaters when they’re not needed, it’s easy to be wasteful when you can’t see the prices racking up

If you want to go one step further, there are other ways to save yourself even more money. Think about how you might generate your own clean energy. Having solar panels fitted onto your roof can be costly, but you will soon begin to reap the benefits.

There are always opportunities to source funding that will support your small business with its carbon initiative, take a look at sites such as the Energy Savings Trust or the Carbon Trust for more information. You may also be eligible for tax relief if you decided to bring in equipment that is energy efficient.

We know how resilient and resourceful small business owners are, and we’d love to hear from anyone who has managed to save themselves a significant figure by going green. We look forward to hearing from you!
