> European Parliament Debates Impact of Financial Crisis on SMEs

The temporary committee on the financial crisis held a workshop looking at the impact of the financial crisis on small businesses.  The FSB sent committee members a briefing setting out the situation for small businesses in the UK.

 

> FSB Mass Lobby in Strasbourg

The FSB, along with colleagues from ESBA, have been in Strasbourg to ask MEPs to support a European Commission proposal that would exempt certain micro businesses from burdensome accounting requirements.  To find out more click here, to view images from our time in Strasbourg click here.

 

> FSB Welcomes French to London

On 28 January FSB national Chairman John Wright CBE, welcomed a delegation form the Mouvement des Enterprises de France (Movement of French Enterprises) who were on a fact-finding visit to London. More

 

> Lisbon Treaty into Force

The Lisbon Treaty entered into force on 1 December.  The treaty aims to rejuvenate the decision-making processes of the EU Institutions.  It increases the powers of the European Parliament, creates an EU President and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.  It also introduces common policies on energy and climate change.  To find out more and to see what impact the Lisbon Treaty has on small businesses click here.

 

> What does the new Commission mean for Small Businesses

The European Parliament will take a decision on the whole College of Commissioners on 9 February.  Commissioner Antonio Tajani (Industry and Entreprenurship, Italy) and Commissioner Michel Barnier (Internal market and Services, France) are set to be the "small business" Commissioners. More

 

> European Commission Proposal for an EU-wide Carbon Tax

The Commission intends to review the 2003 Energy Taxation Directive  with the aim of introducing a carbon-related element to the existing taxation of energy products and electricity.  The proposal is currently in its draft version, and is expected to be finalised early next year by the new Commission.  The main aim of the proposal is to address those sectors not currently covered by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme, such as transport, agriculture and buildings.  More

 

> Spouses Directive

Astrid Lulling MEP, a member of the European Parliament's Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committee is concerned that a large number of self employed people and assisting spouses (usually women) are being denied their rights in terms of access to a state pension, maternity leave etc.  These people are therefore, she believes, in a vulnerable position.  More

 

> FSB Gives Oral Evidence to House of Lords

On 26 October FSB EU and International Affairs Chairman Tina Sommer and FSB EU and International Affairs Policy Adviser Sietske de Groot, gave oral evidence to the House of Lords Sub-Committee B (Internal Market).  Tina and Sietske were giving evidence on the better regulation agenda.  To listen to what they had to say click here.
