Whatever your business, the FSB will work for you.

Local Communities

Small businesses are not just part of the local community; they are the local community.

Over 50% of turnover in independent retailers goes back into the local community.

The planning system and the bodies that control it, have considerable direct and indirect impact on the conditions under which small businesses have to operate.

There are however key points in the planning process where you could influence policies and development decisions to help alleviate impact, or even prevent plans from going ahead.

For guidance on how it all works visit the Department for Communities and Local Government's website.

Update to the Keep Trade Local Campaign

The FSB's Keep Trade Local campaign seeks to stem the tide of business closures; reverse the trend of decline of independent shops and defend the choice and diversity that customers deserve.

To ensure a viable future, for independent shops on and off the high streets in the UK, the FSB is now working harder than ever to reassert the voice of small businesses at every level of government and make your voice heard. For more information read the Keep Trade Local Manifesto or visit the webpage.

Regional and Strategic Planning

The County Councils are involved, along with partners across the East Midlands, in developing and implementing the Regional Spatial Strategy. This includes regional level planning, sub-regional planning in the Three Cities sub-area and the Northern Sub-area, and work along with Nottingham City and district councils in preparing evidence to support their development plans, known as Local Development Frameworks (LDFs).

Development Control

Planning applications can pose opportunities and threats to businesses. Each local authority publishes a weekly list of applications in the press and on their websites. Many of them provide a free email notification service too. If you decide to take action in your own right against a plan you may be eligible for help from Planning Aid East Midlands - a charity employing professional planners, which provides help for those unable to afford to pay consultants' fees.

For more information visit Planning Aid's website.
