2012 FAQs

When and where are the 2012 Games?

 

The Olympic Games will run from Friday 27 July  to Sunday 12 August. The Paralympic Games will run from Wednesday 29 August to Sunday 9 September.

 

Most of the events will take place in the Olympic Park in East London. Some will be held in other venues in London including ExCeL, Greenwich Park, Horse Guards Parade, Lord's Cricket Ground, Wembley and Wimbledon.

 

Rowing will take place at Eton Dorney and the Broxbourne Canoe Slalom course will also be used.

 

Football matches will be played at old Trafford, Villa Park, Hampden Park, St James' Park and the Millennium Stadium.

 

Sailing events will take place at Weymouth and Portland.

 

Who is reponsible for the Games?

 

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA)  is responsible for creating the venues and the infrastructure.

 

The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) will organise, publicise and stage the actual Games.

 

What is the Olympiad?

 

The Olympiad is the four-year period preceeding the 2012 Games and started when the Olympic flag was formally passed from Beijing to London at the closing ceremony of the 2008 Games.
