Essex FSB remains supportive of continued development of the airports in the South East of England because of their overall contribution to the economy.
London Stansted Airport is the largest single site employer in the East of England with 11,600 employees working for 180 on-site airport companies – the majority of which are small and medium sized businesses.
Supports Business
There are also many off-site companies serving Stansted-based businesses; many of these are also small and medium sized enterprises. Stansted Airport contributes more than £400 million to the East of England economy.
It is the UK's third busiest freight airport handling cargo to the value of £8 billion a year and serves around 4.5 million business passengers per year.
Tourists
Stansted Airport is the second largest entry point for overseas visitors to the UK after London Heathrow Airport - 1.44 million tourists come to the UK from overseas by air each year.
Tourism is worth £5 billion per year to the East of England economy and employs over 185,000 people – many of them in small businesses. It will also be an important gateway for visitors to the UK for London 2012.
Inward Investment
Stansted Airport is important to the inward investment programmes for the East of England – there are many multinational companies locating in the Region which use small businesses as part of their supply chains.
