Rural Policies to benefit Essex Businesses

Essex FSB has been invited to submit evidence to the Essex County Council Rural Commission chaired by Professor Jules Pretty.

 

The Commission published its Report on Friday 11 Septemebr 2009 with Expand rural enterprise in Essex the first section of recomendations. There are a total of 12 sections.

Essex FSB will now be aiming to see those recomendations implemented as rapidly as possible to benefit rural enterprise.

Essex FSB Evidence

At a hearing in November 2008 Essex FSB presented evidence on a number of areas including:

  1. Transport
  2. Telecommunications
  3. Post Offices, Shops and related services
  4. Electricity, Gas and Water
  5. Housing

Commission Background

The Essex Rurual Commission was established by Essex Ciounty Council as:

  • More than 70% of the county's land is rural, including most of its 350-mile long coastline
  • Essex has a population of 1.66 million (including the two unitary authorities) living in some 695,000 households. The economy of Essex amounts to some £23 billion, larger than 136 countries worldwide
  • The Commission used a variety of methods to receive evidence. These included open evidence sessions at which 45 witnesses gave evidence and were questioned by the Commission; site visits; submissions of written evidence; survey; and attendance at existing meetings
  • The Commission is backed by a number of nationally recognised experts. They are:
    • Elinor Goodman, former political editor of Channel 4 News, commentator and opinion former on rural issues;
    • leading academic Prof Germaine Greer, author, commentator and broadcaster on rural and conservation issues;
    • Great Bentley campaigner Mary Maskell;
    • Simon Brice, a mid-Essex farmer who has much experience in the changing nature of modern agriculture;
    • Canon John Brown, vice chairman of the Essex Rural Partnership;
    • John Clayton, chief executive of the Essex Chambers of Commerce representing business interests;
    • Tom Oliver, head of rural policy for the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), and
    • Tony Tuckwell, educationalist, author and ex-headmaster of the King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford.
