Local Authority Business Growth Incentive Grants

Councils across Essex, Havering and Redbridge received almost £2.2 million extra grant in the 2009 to 2010 financial year to spend on business support.

The Coalition Government axed the LABGI scheme when it took office.

Local Government Minister Rosie Winterton announced that councils across Essex  would receive an extra £2,241,869 in Government grant between them with Essex County Council receiving £635,034 and the remainder being divided among the other councils.

The money is available through the LABGI (Local Authority Business Growth Incentive) scheme which aims to reward councils that achieve improvements in economic development.

How it should be spent

Essex FSB now wishes to see this extra money – which is additional to other Government grants – being ear marked to provide direct support for local businesses in the area during the current recession.

All councils have been asked to agree to this suggestion and work with business organisations to implement such schemes.
