Preparing Your Business for the Olympics 2012

East Sussex Olympics Fact Sheet 2012

Olympic Park

With talk of the London 2012 Olympics seemingly everywhere, it is easy to ‘tune out' and assume that the events will only impact on businesses based in the capital. However, there are a whole range of issues that might effect you and your staff which you may not have thought of, especially with the Games already underway and the Paralympic Games taking place later this month.

The London 2012 website covers many issues and has a number of useful tools and templates to help businesses to during the games – visit the Business Network pages for up to date information at http://www.london2012.com/business-network

As well as the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the Summer, a lot of the advice and information available is applicable to other major events including the Olympic Torch Relay, the Cultural Olympiad, Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the European Football Championships.

Martyn Compton carries the Olympic torch in HastingsOutside of the controversial issues surrounding the Games, small businesses are making the best of it and finding useful ways to boost sales and make the Olympics work for them.  Reports around the County have shown amazing footfall and ‘feel good' for the Torch Relay and independent pubs, cafes and restaurants have been on-hand to give a big welcome to thirsty and hungry revellers.

The FSB is urging people to enjoy the Games and, in doing so, think about spending locally, which supports local stores, pubs, cafes, restaurants and services.  The FSB is also making it clear to businesses to market their products and services and get prepared for increased visitor traffic and footfall to make the most of the opportunity.

But with opportunity comes risks, and the FSB is advising businesses to ensure they have the appropriate licenses in place for food, drink and entertainment, especially into the evening.  FSB members enjoy 24/7 access to legal advice and a special Games Legal factsheet is available on-line to them.

'OPEN FOR BUSINESS - OUR OLYMPICS SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN ‘Open for Business'

The London 2012 Games is an opportunity for businesses to grow, diversify and innovate due to the influx of tourists to the country. But there has been a lot of news to suggest that businesses are not expecting to do well during this time, and that some may even close for the length of The Games.

To maximise the FSB's presence during the Olympics, we plan to harness the power of our members and other small businesses (and potential members) through an online campaign.

How does it work?

Small businesses UK wide are encouraged to tell us if they are open for business and if you are planning to see growth and success during the Games.
We are asking you to do this in two ways:

Log-on to Crowdmap at https://fsbuk.crowdmap.com/ to put your business on the map, with a short blurb on how they are being affected by the Games. You can add a photos or a video of what they are doing during the games

Tweet with the hashtag #openforbiz to indicate if their business is open and how they are benefiting or being affected by the Games. This will generate a pin on Crowdmap – all tweets will need to be approved by the London Office

All who log their details on Crowdmap will help the FSB generate a map of small businesses open for business UK-wide. We have set-up key categories so business can indicate what type of businesses they work in.

The campaign was launched on Monday 16 July and run throughout the Olympics and Paralympics.
