Let's prove we are up to the challenge and show our visitors that, in Plymouth, we know how to have a good time!
With just weeks to go, there's plenty for all of us to do in preparation for the arrival of the America's Cup World Series racing in early September. Now's the time for us all to grasp the opportunities the sailing fraternity and its visitors will bring for our businesses and the city and show the true meaning of a warm Plymouth welcome.
It's great to see Plymouth getting the international profile it deserves through the America's Cup World Series and we look forward to welcoming the global press to town in September to report from the event itself.
Plymouth's voluntary sector has joined organisations from the public and private sector in supporting Plymouth City Council's hosting of the America's Cup World Series, by offering more than 600 working days of volunteer time during the event which runs from 10-18 September 2011. America's Cup Race Management has estimated that over 460 working days of volunteer time will be needed to technically support the nine day event, requiring voluntary roles ranging from on-water stewards, to runners, media liaison and admin support.
Cllr Vivien Pengelly, Leader of Plymouth City Council said: "Plymouth is incredibly lucky to have an active voluntary sector which offers invaluable support for so many city projects. I am delighted to see the voluntary sector take its place alongside the public and private sectors, to ensure the America's Cup World Series is the best event Plymouth has ever hosted."
The Plymouth Waterfront Partnership also has identified a range of key activities for volunteers to assist with litter picking, planting and painting schemes. Anyone interested in helping to spruce up the Waterfront should
