Bruce UndyBruce Undy opened the discussion by describing a situation in his region where a sub-contractor needed to be CRB checked for just doing one day's work in a primary school.  Due to the bureaucracy around CRB checks this had taken a very long time and held up the work that needed to be carried out.  The speaker also highlighted that CRB checks are valid for three years, even if a crime is committed the at any point during this period.

Steve Mills stated that the Government has not thought this policy through.   It does not make sense to have different levels of CRB checks.

Andy Willox noted that CRB checks are always going to be necessary in order to protect vulnerable people, but it makes sense two levels as the degree of exposure to vulnerable groups varies widely between professions.  However, there are other problems with CRB checks that need to be tackled, for example the fact that you need three different CRB checks for three different jobs.  Therefore Policy supports the motion.

Alison Rawlinson remarked that criminal vetting procedures are necessary, but the current system is costly and bureaucratic.  Therefore I support the motion.

Josephine Baker commented that as a court interpreter I now need to be CRB registered.  On the continent this would only take one day.  Therefore I support the motion.

A speaker from the floor said that giving up lots of personal information makes a lot of people uncomfortable.  If people breach their CRB they can still carry on working without their employer being notified.  Therefore I support this motion.

Robin Twigge expressed his support for the motion and Bruce Undy urged the FSB has to fight for this.
