"Blockades, like the ones we suffered in April, amount to little more than industrial blackmail, creating chaos at our ports and on our roads and costing British companies - which have nothing to do with the cause of the protests - vast amounts of money.  It is not as if such protests from French fisherman are few and far between and their cost to British hauliers and the economy over the years is totally unacceptable, especially now when many logistics companies are already gasping for air.

"If the French government is not willing to be a good neighbour and get its own house in order then the European Commission must act if it is serious about supporting economic success in Europe."

"It is good to get another trade body offering a practical perspective on this issue. We have been asking for something to be done about blockades for years but the authorities have not been able to see the problem other than as one for some hauliers and maybe Kent and Calais. Now they know that manufacturers are affected, and especially in a recession, maybe they will wake up."

"The misery caused by Operation Stack when French strike action closes the ports is acutely felt in the UK and in France. This is an issue for both our governments and they must work together and take action to ensure that this strike action does not keep happening. The cost to businesses, not to mention the inconvenience to residents, is completely unacceptable and must stop."

"The disruption caused by port blockades to both the transport industry and business as a whole is just too great, particularly given our waning economy, to allow the French government's inaction to go unchallenged. While cross-Channel operators have almost come to accept this disruption as an occupational hazard, they find it by no means satisfactory – and nor should they have to."

shepwaycouncil

Shepway District Council

"Shepway District Council is well aware of your Stop the Blockades campaign and supports it wholeheartedly. With the M20 passing through the district, the Eurotunnel Terminal located just outside Folkestone, and the Port of Dover only five miles from our border, the blockades have had a huge impact on the district when they have taken place."
